We love stories! Every couple has their own & one of our favorite parts about being wedding photographers is meeting with newly engaged couples and hearing theirs. The joy of it. The freshness of it. The excitement of it. We can’t get enough! And at the end of it, our couples always ask, “What about you?” So, we decided to share our story too. From our college campus to our little 1940’s home today, here’s our story from our first meeting to our first home together.
It was Alec’s senior year of college & Katie’s junior when the world felt like it shifted from fun college nights to them truly becoming adults. Friends were graduating, Alec was beginning the job search, and they were building the starting blocks of a photography business. Not to mention, all around them friends were getting engaged or married. To them it felt like everyone else was in their own bliss of rings & weddings. They had been dating on-and-off for three years and had talked about the possibility. By the end of that year they planned to be engaged themselves, or so Katie thought.
One thing you should know about Alec is he loves surprises & confusing people when it comes to said surprises. So it should have occurred to Katie that he would pull a trick on her when it came to something so big. All of a sudden he changed up those talks and started saying they weren’t ready to get engaged. Maybe in a year or two they could but he had changed his mind about the timing because of school. Katie was so heartbroken. She thrived on having a plan and hated the thought to him changing it like that! How unfair?! She couldn’t make him propose when she wanted and he knew she would patiently wait. If he wanted to wait he had to have a good reason and she’d rather him be ready than rushed. What she didn’t know was he already had his grandmother’s diamond placed in a shiny new band waiting for him at the jewelers.
That’s how they ended up in their biggest, silliest fight to date. A few friends had invited them to a trivia night with them, which sounded simple enough to Alec. Of course they would go. Katie would not stand for it though because of all their friends these were the two couples she couldn’t stomach being around. One couple had just gotten married & the other engaged and it was all they could talk about because they were so excited. To her already downtrodden heart non-stop torture is more of what it sounded like. How could Alec be so insensitive? Didn’t he know how upset she was that he had changed the plan?? There was no way on God’s green earth that she would be going to that trivia night and hearing about flowers, dresses, and what it’s like to have a new last name.
Alec’s plan had worked. Katie had no clue he had the perfect proposal planned for the very next night…
An excerpt of Alec’s dramatic journal of that night:
“And we just got in a fight because I want to hang out with our friends. You made a big deal about not going because all the girls do is talk about is weddings and you can’t handle that. I just wanted to yell, ‘I’M PROPOSING TO YOU TOMORROW!!!!’”
