Life Lately: Designing Our Home

We love watching home makeover or building shows like Fixer Upper or Extreme Home Makeover. There is just something so fascinating about seeing a home come to life! The process, the tough choices, and that crazy amazing end result. We can’t get enough! So, we decided to share our own home building story. So, from the day we chose to build to the final product we’re sharing it right here on the blog:

Building a house is a process where you have to go one step at a time. This past week we hit our 2nd big mile-stone in the process: designing our home!! One of the main reasons we were drawn to build was the level of customization we could do! We’re both picky people and knew renovating would end up costing us more in the long run.

Wonderfully, we got to pick out every little design element from our cabinet colors to our hardwoods. There were SO many choices!!! From our initial visit to the neighborhood we’d received a little design booklet and had made so many notes. It had us dreaming away! To be honest, we thought this part would be so easy because we are so picky. The closer we got to our appointment though the more we started questioning our decisions. Yes, we can change things in the long run, but there are decisions that will affect us for years! That will make you re-think some decisions.

So, it came down until the day of the meeting and we just had to go with out gut. We also had the opportunity to go into the design studio and play around with our options. It’s basically a large room with walls of cabinets, faucets, and other home details. It was AMAZING!!!! It made it a lot easier to make decisions when you can see it all in person.

Now that we actually have our choices locked in we feel so relieved. We also can now share them with you!! So, here’s our kitchen design!! Next week we’ll share the rest of the house because its a lot of choices. We can’t wait to watch them come to life over the next few months!!

Designing the Kitchen

Designing Our House: Kitchen | Katie & Alec Photography Wedding Photographers in Birmingham, AlabamaAs you can tell, there were a lot of choices for the cabinets alone. We knew we wanted the perimeter to be the Brellin Purestyle in white! Its just classic & clean which is our overall goal. Then, it came down to what we wanted to paint the island. In the end, we decided on the stone gray for a nice pop of color!!

When designing we were so ready to pick some gorgeous counter-tops!!  Our choice was hands down the Carrera Grigio polished quartz. Not only is it gorgeous but its also way easier to clean! Then, we picked the white gloss subway tiles in a herringbone pattern for our back-splash. Simple, clean, and classic in every way! It only took a little convincing to get Alec on board for the herringbone pattern haha!Designing Our House: Kitchen | Katie & Alec Photography Wedding Photographers in Birmingham, AlabamaDesigning Our House: Kitchen | Katie & Alec Photography Wedding Photographers in Birmingham, AlabamaSo our sink will be in our kitchen island, which we’re so excited about! Although we love the farmhouse sink, we just didn’t feel like it would hold up as well. We chose the one bowl stainless option so it wouldn’t scratch as easily & for ease. For the faucet we couldn’t quite agree 100% so we ended up with the Kohler Simplice polished chrome. Compromise has been a big part of the design process and this one wasn’t too big a deal. Designing Our House: Kitchen | Katie & Alec Photography Wedding Photographers in Birmingham, AlabamaThere were way too many options for appliances. To be honest, neither one of us our chefs so we kept it simple with the basic package. We’ll just be happy to have a dishwasher (something we haven’t had since we got married).Designing Our House: Kitchen | Katie & Alec Photography Wedding Photographers in Birmingham, AlabamaFor our rangehood we liked the pop of the silver. We walked through several homes being built and it just looked SO good! So, we went with the whirlpool stainless hood.

We’re so thankful to be able to share this journey with you! This has hands down been the most exciting journey we’ve ever been on! If you have any questions or want to hear about a particular part of the journey just drop a comment below & we’ll make sure to share.

Blessings,

Katie
