KAP Behind the Scenes

How We Became Cat People

It was fall retreat Katie’s freshman year of college. She’d had a huge crush on that tall, handsome boy named Alec. The one with the great smile and a camera. Realistically there was no way they’d work out, at least that’s what she told herself. So, as the pastor asked everyone to pray over what they were looking for in a future spouse she left him out of her mind. In her little green notebook with purple butterflies flying around on it what she was looking for…

Someone who is incredibly thoughtful…

A man who was after God’s own heart…

Creativity & humor…

An animal person.

Well, when we got married Alec hit everything on the list but one little point: being an animal person! Oops, well, even with that one point missed we somehow worked it out. Until day two of our marriage! Haha! That’s when Katie (the major animal person, especially with dogs) started begging Alec for a dog. Every single day for 6 month straight she asked to no avail. He attempted to hold off her pet loving urges by buying her a fish, naturally the next best thing to a dog. When that surprisingly didn’t work she was still asking and asking day after day.

At that six month mark he figured she wasn’t going to let up any time soon and he had to do something. The next time she asked he said it without even thinking, “fine, we can get a cat.” It seemed a lot easier than a dog, and he figured he wouldn’t find a cat quite as annoying. He underestimated though just how desperate she was for a furry little best friend and figured she wouldn’t want one. So, when she enthusiastically yelled “YES!!!!!” he found himself at the humane society within a week.

We went expecting to get a cat for Katie and came home with sweet little Dixie. Within a month it was clear she was all about Alec and the two became buddies very slowl. Then she began sleeping in between his legs, cuddling with him on the couch, and one day Katie found him petting her… So, Katie asked with curiosity, “do you actually like her?!” What he said next shocked her to her core… “I love her.”

It was then that we both realized Alec wasn’t actually “not an animal person” he was just a cat person!! At least when it came to Dixie. Then, this past December without warning Katie pressed to get another cat. Two days later we found ourselves at the humane society and the same scene played out. “We won’t get a cat today, we’ll just look around…” That same day we brought home Belle. Then, with time she also chose Alec as her favorite. Cuddling, begging him for attention, and coming when he calls. The two cats fight over who gets to be near him and it’s pretty adorable.

Now, Alec has gone from someone who swore he’d never own a pet and Katie a stout dog person to us becoming cat people. All we have to do now is see what we get next, another cat or a dog… We’ll see who wins the next round 😉
