KAP Behind the Scenes

A Valentine’s Day Flashback

In honor of Valentine’s Day we figured we’d share a little flashback for you! In fact, since we know so many of you will be getting some shiny new bling & a fiance for the holiday we’re sharing our own proposal story!

It was August 2014, and we had been dating for three years throughout college. We had talked & prayed about getting engaged sometime soon, but Alec had all of a sudden changed his mind. He wanted to wait, he said, for at least another year. Katie was less than thrilled, because little did she know it was simply to keep her surprised when it all did happen.

The date started like any other would have, cloaked in ambiguity. Alec loves surprising people, so our dates were typically top secret (and they still are). Katie only knew to dress up for a fun night.

Katie had no clue just how special the night would be…

Alec is the type of person who never does anything half-way. Whether he’s planning the perfect birthday gift for a friend, or when he planned our sweet proposal, he goes all in. So, he had prepared the perfect night for him to ask Katie to marry him.

It was the perfect Alabama day, cool enough that we could spend most of the day outside. The sun was out and ready to provide the most perfect sunset over Birmingham. The first stop on our grand mystery date was the spot where we had our very first date: Flip Burger. Alec seemed nervous, but Katie dismissed his strange behavior as him being tired. The thought of a proposal didn’t even cross her mind.

At dinner, we talked about how far God had brought our relationship. We laughed at how awkward our first date was, reminisced over some of our favorite memories, and we celebrated how much we had grown together. Really, Alec’s hope was to look back at the past, so we could be thankful for where we were. Over French fries & milkshakes we talked for the longest time and belly laughed more than we had in a long time.

In that moment, we experienced so much joy. Katie didn’t think the night could get any sweeter….

We were babies back then!

Stop two on our date night brought us to one of our favorite locations: Vulcan Park & Museum. It was our first time there together & we made it right before the sun began its descent. We absolutely love the city, really any big city, but Birmingham especially. From the top of Vulcan we could see the city where our relationship grew. UAB, the place where we first met. The spot where Alec’s car broke down after our first date (for real, not like in all the country songs). The apartment where he first told here we loved her. So many sweet memories all brought to life in one single moment.

As we watched the sun fade over the city, Alec began a monologue filled with his signature thoughtfulness (and humor, because he can only be so serious & so mushy). Before Katie even knew what was happening, Alec was down on one knew. It literally couldn’t have been more perfect. Afterwards, as we headed back to Alec’s place (or so Katie thought) he said we had one last stop to make. We just had to go to the creamery that Katie worked at to show her best friend the ring. When we got there, Alec had 20 or our closest friends there to celebrate! We spent the rest of the night being loved on & enjoying the amazing “we’re engaged” feeling we hope we never forget.

It is still one of our favorite memories. Once a year we make a trip back to Flip Burger to celebrate our relationship over our favorite burgers. Vulcan is now a place we love shooting at regularly. And the creamery we celebrated at is now the spot where we meet all of our clients & celebrate their engagement with them. Each place hold so much sentimental value for us. We love incorporating places that mean so much to us into our business.

If you’re recently engaged, we would love to celebrate your story over ice cream! Nothing would bring us more joy! Simply head to our contact form to get things started.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Y’all!

On top of that, they made sure all of the poses were natural and felt comfortable to us. It was such a fun, relaxed experience with them and my husband!”

"From the engagement session to our wedding day, they captured the details that are important to us.
