We love stories! Every couple has their own & one of our favorite parts about being wedding photographers is meeting with newly engaged couples and hearing theirs. The joy of it. The freshness of it. The excitement of it. We can’t get enough! And at the end of it, our couples always ask, “What about you?” So, we decided to share our story too. From our college campus to our little 1940’s home today, here’s our story from our first meeting to our first home together.
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life. Proverbs 13:12
The pastor at fall retreat stood at the front of the room talking about the one topic no one wants to hear about when they’re in college: dating. Katie dreaded it because she’d been pining over the boy she met playing Frisbee that warm August night. It was October now and nothing had changed. They had the same friends now and she’d become a part of his world through Campus Crusade, church, and feeding him and his friends from her insanely big meal plan. They’d even be hanging out for the entire weekend at fall retreat.
Day after day she just hoped he’d notice her and it felt more and more like he didn’t even know she existed. So when the pastor pressed his lips to the mic and asked who all in the room was single she cringed. Everything in her begged for him to raise his hand too. She didn’t know definitively if he was even single, so when he didn’t raise his hand it cut deep.
Time seemed to stop and she couldn’t breathe when the pastor asked the next logical question… Who was dating someone? Then the world ended. Or so it seemed. Alec raised his hand and it broke her heart. He was the emcee for all the Campus Crusade events, or “Cru” as they affectionately called it. Everyone knew him and when he raised his hand it was a big deal all around. As if knowing he was dating someone wasn’t bad enough everyone hit pause on the talk and asked when that happened and with who. Could it get worse?
What Katie didn’t know was he was just casually dating a girl for a little bit, but nothing serious. He still had his eye on Katie though and was intrigued by how kind she was and how friendly.
The next day they practiced an exercise where you had to work as a team, guy & girl, to complete an impossible task together. Guys lined up on the left, the girls on the right and Katie just jumped in line with friends. She’d given up hope in Alec noticing her after the dating revelation and didn’t care who she teamed up with. Alec on the other hand pushed and maneuvered through the guys line to make sure he’d be teamed up with her.
When they got to their turn Katie turned bright red, blushing with a mixture of nerves and frustration deep within her. They had to hold hands and keep each other from falling off two tightropes that started out close and grew further and further apart. Holding hands?!? Fall retreat was supposed to be fun and enriching but now. Yep, she was done for, she couldn’t help but be excited.
They were the only team to make it all the way to the end without falling and it only poured salt in the wound for her. Joy & excitement filled Alec and he had no clue what he had just done to her…
